Susan’s Nourishment Resources

As someone who's been in the field of dietetics for quite some time, I recall the days when a file cabinet was the quickest resource available.

Back then, providing clients with background material meant relying solely on hard copies (if you had a copy machine nearby), with no internet, Google searches, or social media at our disposal. Fast forward to today, moving my practice online prompted me to seek new methods of organizing and sharing information with clients. My objectives were clear: stay abreast of the latest scientific findings and ensure the information I provided was evidence-based and easily digestible. As my practice evolved to address more complex health issues and incorporate health coaching, so did my approach to providing resources. Guiding clients through lifestyle changes highlighted the need for diverse and readily accessible information. Transitioning to telehealth to accommodate family commitments added another layer of complexity. Below, I outline the evolution of my resources, an imperfect system aimed at providing clients with evidence-based, accessible, and practical guidance—a place to validate information and empower informed health decisions.

A few years back, a young client challenged me to create a Pinterest account to house background information for clients.

Thus, began my journey of establishing an online filing system, making the transition to telehealth seamless. Boards are categorized according to the topics of my former paper files, spanning from uncommon diagnoses to nutrition-related humor. Weight management tips reside in the Anti-Inflammatory board, while diabetes and heart health have dedicated boards. The nutrition and mental health board, dubbed “MIND, body, spirit,” features a subsection on food and brain health.  Additionally, a board titled “mind, body, SPIRIT” provides resources on meditation, retreat centers, and topics for deeper exploration. Despite my efforts to keep up with the latest information, the task remains daunting. If you believe a particular topic warrants inclusion, drop me a note with the link and a brief explanation of your interest. Btw- the Pinterest “P” link can be found in the footer of my website.

Other Resources:

Finding an accessible book on nutrition for general health can be challenging. A personal favorite is  How to Build a Healthy Brain, by Kimberley Wilson , as I believe cognitive well-being is integral to overall health.   For more about the author and the book, check out her interview with Krista Tippett in 2022.

AI

Embracing the opportunities presented by technological advancements, AI offers a novel approach to menu planning of all things.  Often deemed one of the most challenging aspects of “adulting”, menu planning requires time, energy, some cooking experience, and creativity. My interest in AI was piqued when a client shared their experience with their favorite AI platform, which generated a customized seven-day menu, recipes, and a grocery list aligning with their dietary goals. These AI-powered programs, many of which are free, offer a solution for those feeling uninspired or overwhelmed in the kitchen.
